Reslden:,e- of W. J, freeman Destroy-
ed Monday -Hose Wouldn't Reach _
Fire destroyed the residence of iN.
J. Freeman just east of the city early
Monday morning and through the in-
ability of the fire department to get
~~ water on the blaze the house burned
to the ground with the firemen pawer-
less to check the flames,
It was about 3:30 a. m. when Mr.
Freeman was aroused by the noise of
flames and found the kitchen all ablaze.
An a`Tar~3 was turned in and the de-
partment responded promptly only to
find~he apparatus useless on account
of the hose being too .short to reach
from the nearest- hydrant. Had they
been able to reach the hose with water
it eould have been saved with compar-
atively little damage.. .
Finding it useless to try to save Lhe
house the firemen turned their attention
to carrying out the furniture, about all
of which was saved Other nearby
buildings were protected by a bucket
brigade and the fire confined to the
main building.
Tfie loss ~s partially covered by in-
surance.
