We note that the city council }gas
been considering the-matter of the
width of the 'streets. of this city.
When the meri who laid out-the
original town came to decide hot•:
wide the streets should be they
thought that an-account of the fact
that all the lots faced either nart'.t
or south that .they would lay out
the streets _riinrting east and west
as eighty.:faet wide and aii t~;e
streets running north and south a-
sixty feet wide.. It has }ong been
tke cu'sfom of facing the houses to-
•Nard the .wider streets, leaving
.navy a block on the streets running
+~aralled to the highway or rtiilroad
with 71ot a house. facing thereon.
.'':. ..
Now an eighty foot street from
~t•operty line ,~ property line i a
~ot of land and has never ben
aken care of. When the time me
_o grade such streets and pu grarol
• n them the cify dads felt tnat about
~oXty feet. was all they eauld pas-
ihly take care of, which left twenty
;eet each sido of the gravelled pnr-
~ion to grow up to weeds and fox-
:ail: ,Some Ecru people did not like
~o have such a weed patch in front
~f their progerty and so extended
:heir lawns out to the gravel. Verp
;etv sidewalks tvero over laid and
the whole thing is a mess. --

Now it is prppose7l .to lay ouE a
forty-foot section in the center of
the street, with mythical curbs
located, thou allow five feet -for a
sidewalk next to the property Line,
with a fifteen foot parking :strip
between: that and the •curb.. TFe
same forty-foot roadway will he
laid out on the, sixty-foot streets,
with only afive-foot parklrig strip
and the £ive foot sidewalk. If this
had been done in the old days and
the property owners encouraged to
plant. trees along these parking
strips, Central Point tvouid be a
different lpoking town. We hope
the new plan will be carried-onY
and.-tve alsolrope tp see many more
trees ptanted along the parkit;;'
strigs to givg_shade to future gen•i
orations.
