Herald 01/16/1908School House Burned I Central Point experienced her first) >n' o cos$ly fire last Friday evening, when ` I the fine new school house burned to the s at ~ ground. The fire was dissevered about c 7 o'clock, when it first burst through ~ a 9s ~ the roof, and had a reasonable supply ; ii of water been available at the time the i a I lower part of the building could doubt- ~ f V e leas.~have been saved, the indications b being that the fire originated in the t~ i- attic or roof. A defective flue is g®n- s orally conceded to have been the cause e a ( of the conflagration. For a time it was ~ 6 feared that the old building would slay' d ad go, but a number of young men formed, T a bucket brigade and carried water to ~ u the top of the building, with x•hich the h t, roof -was kept wet down until all clan- J is ger was past, s~ Several hundred people from town d' .h and surrounding country gathered in ;t the school grounds to watch the `!pride h. of the town" barn, and on all sides a: .o could be°heard regrets that the town ; w has so Song continued its dilatory tae- ~ b' e tics in regard to installing water works ~ P and that the frequent efforts ~ the. ~ Central Point Herald in trying to arouse ~ f~ °d :interest in the project has so long gone a' unheeded. Had it been possible to have ~ t] ~, held an election on a water bond propo- , P t_ sition in the glare of the burning build-Ia ~_ inl;, however, it is probable that ~ a but few dissenting votes would have' jE ,d d been recorded. bra ~ The loss amounted to about E16,500 P a to the district, $10,000 of which is ~s covered by insurance. In addition to f t' ~' this is the toes of practically all of the ; T Id children's books, as well as all the ~ tl 'e school records. In many cases the ~ ii .$ loss to the children in books will be'~ t- more of a burden than the lose of the ~ o ,t building to the district, School will be resumed .next week in I e the old building, which has four rooms, ie the town hall and perhaps two of the' 11 churches. The district will rebuild as st soon as possible and the new building A a ,will be larger and better than the one i b c ~uat destrgyed. !
