Despite the-factof--continued disap- pointmenta' and long perlade of waits for railroad .improvements "hope springs eternal in the human breast" and-~-wharr a-party- icf=otti~i als=•af=•'~tii~ Southern Pacific company aboard their inspection motor car stopped here to gook over the property and get an out- line on what improvements could be made and the best way to carry them out, the same old'hope of a new station house was Lrought to the minds of all. It would seem,"too, thatthepros-- peel of a new building_is better at this time than it has ever been befure and that •other improvements in the local i yards are to be carried out in the neat ~'I future. Arrangements are being made to connect with the city water supply and install modern conveniences in the station. It is announced, too, that Che new aide track on which work was commence in the Winter will be cam- pleted as soon as the material can. be laid down here and put in place. The gentlemen also gave it out that something regarding the removal ~ ~of the station house from the position it now holds In blocking pine street would b2 undertaken within a short time and that very ~like}y a new building would be erected. It is the hope of all resi- dents of the city and patrons of the local station that we. may boon see some material evideneo that the com- p~ny'means to carry out its promises in this respect. Those in the party were R. I,. Fields, rdad superintendent, F. M. Siefer's, assistant superintendent, of Portland, and• D- C. Harris, road supervisor of Roseburg and they were making the trip of inspection over the road in one of the new inspection cars which are a new departure for the system as this is the. first trip of the car_over ~thia line. The car is run by a gasoline axptor ,and•.la built for four or five passengers, a>Sd tho crew so is of small dimensions as motor care go.
